Suleja Correctional Centre: AWJAI’s Legal Aid and Inmate Support

More Than BarsAWJAI and Citizens’ Gavel legal team at the Suleja Correctional Centre

On March 20, 2025, AWJAI, in collaboration with Citizens’ Gavel Foundation for Social Justice, conducted a Suleja Correctional Centre legal aid visit to support inmate welfare and assess gaps in access to legal representation.

The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to improve access to justice, protect dignity and strengthen legal support for indigent inmates across Correctional Centres.

Key Outcomes from the Visit

  • Support for inmate welfare
  • Barbing clippers were donated to the facility to help address shortages affecting inmate hygiene and personal grooming
  • Assessment for pro bono legal support

During the Suleja Correctional Centre legal aid visit, AWJAI and Citizens’ Gavel interviewed inmates without legal representation.  These discussions highlighted challenges related to delayed case progress and the need for structured pro bono legal assistance.

The visit reinforced the importance of sustained legal aid interventions, collaboration with justice sector partners and continued engagement with correctional institutions to improve access to justice and detention conditions.

Additional updates from our legal aid interventions are documented on our social media platforms as activities occur.
