Priority Justice Areas

Long-term focus on the justice issues affecting rights, safety and accountability.

Priority Justice Areas

AWJAI’s Priority Justice Areas are the pressing justice issues to which we give sustained, long-term attention. They do not replace our programmes or projects; rather, they help shape and inform the work we undertake across the organisation.

Alongside our established programmes and time-bound projects, we provide legal support, public education, monitoring and advocacy in these focused areas. This enables us to respond to immediate needs while maintaining a long-term commitment to addressing systemic injustice and strengthening accountability.

Domestic and Gender-Based Violence

Professional Misconduct and Legal Accountability

We support people affected by misconduct within the legal profession by documenting complaints and pursuing appropriate disciplinary remedies, including proceedings before the Legal Practitioners Disciplinary Committee. Where the reported conduct may constitute a criminal offence, we also support reporting to the police and other relevant authorities. No legal practitioner is above the law.

Unlawful Detention and the Rights of People in Custody

We work to protect the rights and dignity of people held in police stations, correctional centres and other places of detention. Sustained Focus, Long-Term Commitment

These Priority Justice Areas guide AWJAI’s response to some of the most pressing challenges affecting individuals and communities. We will continue to work in these areas over the long term through legal support, public education, monitoring, advocacy and engagement with relevant institutions.

Our priorities may develop as new justice concerns emerge, but our commitment remains constant: to protect rights, strengthen accountability and improve access to justice.
