Legal Aid for Young Detainees: Two Teenagers Freed After AWJAI Intervention

On October 29, 2024, AWJAI, in partnership with Citizens’ Gavel, embarked on a mission to restore hope and justice to the forgotten inmates of Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre.  Among the many individuals we encountered, the stories of two young men, Mr. MM (17) and Mr. HA (18), stood out.

Mr. MM was just 17 years old when he was accused of stealing an iPhone 13 Pro.  Despite maintaining his innocence, he spent eight months in detention.  Hope began to return when AWJAI’s legal team led by Mr. Femi Moses Ekundayo took up his case.  A bail application was granted on November 12, 2024, and after several days of administrative delays, Mr. MM was finally released on November 18, 2024.

Mr. HA, aged 18, faced a similar ordeal.  He was accused of stealing a motorcycle, despite being an innocent bystander. With legal support and representation, the charges against him were dismissed for lack of evidence.  On November 18, 2024, Mr. HA walked out of Kuje Custodial Centre, free at last but deeply affected by the experience.

The release of these two young men is a reminder of how critical, timely legal intervention can be.  Their stories show the difference that advocacy, persistence and access to legal representation can make in restoring fairness and dignity.

AWJAI remains committed to standing with the marginalised, ensuring that hope is restored and justice is accessible to all.  These stories reflect the resilience of those who endure injustice and the transformative impact of sustained legal support.

Together, we will continue to speak up for those whose voices are often silenced and work toward a justice system that protects the rights and dignity of every person.
