Police Oversight Visit at Nyanya Police Station

The Nyanya police oversight visit reflects AWJAI’s continued commitment to justice and community welfare. On November 20, 2024, AWJAI partnered with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), Hope Behind Bars Africa and Citizens’ Gavel to conduct a monitoring visit at Nyanya Police Station, FCT Command. His Lordship Haruna A. Haruna of the Karu Magistrate Court led the exercise, reinforcing the importance of judicial oversight in detention practice.
During the visit, the team assessed detention conditions and reviewed compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA). These oversight efforts help prevent unlawful detention while promoting transparency and accountability within law enforcement.
In addition, AWJAI and Hope Behind Bars Africa (HBBA) provided sanitary items, including detergents, disinfectants and toilet rolls.
This intervention addressed hygiene concerns identified during earlier visits and improved conditions for both detainees and officers. Practical support like this strengthens the impact of police oversight visits.
Furthermore, the visit reinforced the principles of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), which promotes fair and humane treatment for individuals in custody. It also reflects AWJAI’s ongoing collaboration with partners such as Citizens’ Gavel to advance accountability and reform within the justice system.
At AWJAI, we remain committed to promoting lawful detention practices and protecting human rights. Through sustained partnerships and regular oversight, we continue to safeguard the dignity and rights of all individuals in custody.
