Our Impact & Achievements

This page presents selected documented outcomes and visual evidence from AWJAI’s work across priority justice areas and programmes.

AWJAI’s Prison Intervention Programme works to ensure that people in correctional centres are not forgotten by the justice system. We focus on protecting detainees’ rights, improving access to justice and addressing situations where individuals remain in custody longer than the law allows.

Through prison visits conducted by AWJAI, sometimes in collaboration with partner organisations, the Chief Judge of the FCT and other justice sector stakeholders, we help detainees access legal assistance and ensure their cases receive proper attention. We speak up for individuals who cannot easily advocate for themselves, follow up on cases of prolonged detention and provide legal intervention and representation where needed. This includes supporting lawful case resolution and in appropriate situations, assisting with the payment of small fines for eligible convicted individuals who would otherwise remain in prison simply because they cannot afford them.

The work highlighted on this page reflects selected documented interventions where legal support and engagement helped improve outcomes for detainees and strengthened accountability within correctional facilities. Many of our ongoing activities are shared on our social media platforms, where we provide updates as they happen.

Domestic and gender based violence often leaves survivors facing harm, fear and limited access to justice.  At AWJAI, we support individuals affected by abuse through legal assistance, advocacy and engagement with relevant institutions.

Our work helps survivors understand their rights, seek protection, and pursue accountability.  The outcomes shared here reflect selected interventions where timely report helped restore safety, dignity and access to justice.  We continue to share more updates and ongoing interventions on our social media platforms.

Illegal eviction is not just a housing dispute. It is a crime that strips individuals and families of security, dignity and their fundamental rights. Many victims are forced from their homes through intimidation, deception, or unlawful use of force, often without understanding the legal protections available to them.

At AWJAI, we support individuals facing unlawful eviction and violations of tenancy rights. Through legal assistance, advocacy, and engagement with relevant authorities, we work to challenge illegal actions, protect the rights of those affected and pursue accountability. The outcomes shared here reflect selected interventions from our work.

At the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI), we do more than speak about injustice. We help people take meaningful action, including when concerns arise within the legal profession. We regularly receive complaints from individuals who feel wronged or let down and do not know where to turn. We support them by guiding them through the process of preparing and filing formal complaints and ensuring their concerns are raised through the appropriate channels.

Institutional Recognition

In recognition of AWJAI’s contributions to advancing the implementation of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) formally commended AWJAI for its partnership and impact during 2025.

Respect for due process is essential to a fair justice system. The Administration of Criminal Justice Act was designed to protect the rights of suspects and detainees, ensure lawful arrest and detention and promote timely handling of cases. When these standards are not followed, individuals can face prolonged detention and other rights violations.

At AWJAI, we carry out monitoring and oversight visits to police stations and detention facilities in collaboration with relevant oversight bodies. During these visits, we speak with detainees, review detention records, identify cases of prolonged detention or lack of legal representation and raise concerns with the appropriate authorities. Our goal is to promote compliance with the law, protect the rights of detainees, and strengthen accountability within the justice system. The outcomes shared here reflect selected interventions from these visits, while more updates on our ongoing monitoring work are shared on our social media platforms.

Lasting change in the justice system requires more than individual case intervention. It also requires consistent engagement, public awareness and dialogue with institutions responsible for upholding the law. Advocacy plays a vital role in addressing systemic challenges and promoting reforms that protect rights and strengthen accountability.

At AWJAI, we actively engage with stakeholders, public institutions, and communities to raise justice sector concerns, share insights from our work and advocate for practical reforms. Through meetings, public forums, media engagement and collaboration with partners, we contribute to conversations that promote fairness, transparency and respect for human rights. The activities highlighted here reflect selected advocacy engagements from our work, while more updates on our ongoing efforts are shared on our social media platforms.
