Strategic Plan (2023 - 2028)

This Strategic Plan sets out AWJAI’s priorities, focus areas, and approach for advancing access to justice, accountability, and human rights protection over the defined period. It provides a clear framework for how we allocate resources, strengthen our programmes, measure progress, and respond to emerging justice challenges. Grounded in evidence and guided by our mission, this plan reflects our commitment to delivering meaningful, sustainable outcomes for individuals and communities affected by injustice.

Empowering Victims

We provide legal aid, representation and counseling to victims of injustice, prioritizing vulnerable individuals and cases like illegal dispossession, professional misconduct, Gender Based Violence (GBV) and other pressing forms of injustice.

Prison Intervention Program

AWJAI’s Prison Intervention Program aims to provide legal aid to indigent inmates, challenge unlawful detentions, and advocate for systemic prison reforms. Through direct legal representation, policy advocacy, and stakeholder engagement, the program seeks to uphold the rights of detainees and promote access to justice within Nigeria’s correctional system.

Advocate for transformative reforms in the Nigerian justice system, ensuring equal access to justice and safeguarding human rights for all.

Professional Misconduct

Promote integrity and justice by ensuring accountability among professionals, particularly lawyers and medical personnel, to restore public trust in these vital fields that form the backbone of a just and ethical society.

Accountability in Law Enforcement

Hold rogue law enforcement officers accountable for unlawful actions committed under the guise of their uniform, by collaborating with the Nigeria Police Force and the Police Service Commission.

Building Societal Resilience

Collaborate with organisations to conduct public awareness campaigns, equipping citizens with knowledge of their legal rights, and empowering them to assert same.

Our Programmes in Action

Prison Intervention Programme (PIP)

Through regular prison visits, case reviews, and legal representation, we provide legal aid to inmates awaiting trial or wrongfully detained.
The PIP focuses on reducing prolonged pre-trial detention and promoting fair trial standards.

Police Monitoring Visits

In collaboration with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), we conduct independent monitoring of police stations in the Federal Capital Territory, to encourage rights-based policing and prevent abuses such as unlawful detention, torture, or harassment.
These visits help strengthen transparency, professionalism, and trust between law enforcement and communities.

Professional Misconduct and Accountability

AWJAI tracks and supports complaints involving unethical conduct by legal practitioners. By promoting accountability, we strengthen public trust in the justice system.

Gender-Based and Domestic Violence Support

We offer legal and psychosocial support to survivors of gender-based and domestic violence.
Our team collaborates with law enforcement and community partners to ensure access to justice, safety, and empowerment for victims.

Illegal Eviction Response

We provide emergency legal assistance to victims of unlawful evictions, protecting their right to shelter and due process.
Through mediation and litigation, we advocate for humane and lawful approaches to property and tenancy disputes.
