Access to Justice in Action: Four Stories, One Commitment

When justice is out of reach, intervention can make all the difference.

Access to justice is more than having laws in place. It means ensuring that people can understand, navigate, and access the justice system regardless of their circumstances.

At the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI), our legal aid and justice interventions focus on ensuring that financial hardship, prolonged delays, or lack of legal representation do not become barriers to justice.

Over the reporting period, four cases highlighted the importance of timely intervention and access to legal support.

Restoring Freedom After Years in Detention

Mrs. KJ had spent more than two years in detention while awaiting an opportunity to properly defend herself in court. During a correctional centre monitoring visit, AWJAI met her, listened to her concerns, and supported her with legal representation.

Following months of legal representation and advocacy, Mrs. KJ regained her freedom on 17 July 2026.

When Justice Stands Still

Mr. A had been attending court since December 2025, yet his criminal case remained unresolved. At a hearing in June 2026, AWJAI provided legal representation. When the prosecution and nominal complainant failed to appear, our lawyer applied for the case to be struck out for want of diligent prosecution.

The court granted the application, and Mr. A walked out of court a free man on 22 June 2026.

When Poverty Becomes a Barrier

In another case, Mr. A was convicted and given the option of paying a fine. Unable to afford it, he remained in custody.

AWJAI intervened by paying the court-imposed fine on his behalf, securing his release and giving him an opportunity to move forward.

A Second Chance

In a separate case involving Mr. A, a fight escalated into a criminal matter that resulted in his imprisonment. Although the court imposed a fine rather than a custodial sentence, his inability to pay meant he remained behind bars.

AWJAI paid the fine and secured his release.

Justice Should Not Depend on Your Wallet

These cases demonstrate a simple truth: access to justice can change lives.

Whether the barrier is prolonged proceedings, lack of legal representation, or inability to meet financial obligations, AWJAI works to ensure that vulnerable individuals are not left to face the justice system alone.

Because justice should be accessible to everyone, not only to those who can afford it.
