When Ms. J.A. faced her worst nightmare, her world was shattered. Her innocent daughter, taken from her grandparents without permission by her father, endured unimaginable abuse at the hands of her stepmother – leaving her with physical and emotional scars no child should ever bear.
The betrayal cut deep—not only from the stepmother’s cruelty, but from the father’s negligence that allowed such horrors to unfold. Yet, in the face of heartbreak and despair, Ms. J.A. refused to be silenced. Determined to fight for her daughter’s safety, she sought help from The Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI), who stood steadfastly by her side.
The truth emerged in the most distressing way—photos of the child’s injuries surfaced, igniting public outrage and calls for justice. With AWJAI and Hope Behind Bars Africa (HBBA), by her side, Ms. J.A. worked alongside law enforcement to ensure the perpetrators were held accountable.
The Nigerian police responded swiftly, launching an investigation that led to the arrest of the culprits. The stepmother and father were charged under the Kano State Penal Code Law with Conspiracy and Cruelty to a Child , while the father faced an additional charge of negligence.
On January 27, 2025, both defendants were arraigned in court, pleading “not guilty”. They were remanded in Correctional Services custody pending trial, with the next hearing scheduled for February 10, 2025. AWJAI, in collaboration with HBBA, will continue to provide legal counsel and a watching brief on behalf of the child and her mother to ensure justice is fully served.
AWJAI commends the efforts of the Kano State Police Command for their swift response and unwavering commitment to justice in this matter. Their dedication to protecting to vulnerable individuals and addressing such heinous acts against children is both commendable and essential.
But this case is more than a fight against injustice – it is a testament to resilience. Ms. J.A.’s unwavering courage in the face of unimaginable pain serves as a powerful reminder of a mother’s love and determination. Her fight is not just for her child – it is a beacon of hope for countless others who feel trapped in silence, fear or despair.
AWJAI will not rest until justice is served and this brave mother’s voice is heard. Together, we stand against abuse, demand accountability, and work toward a future where every child is safe, valued, and free from harm.
