Kano Child Abuse Case: A Mother’s Fight for Justice

When Ms JA discovered that someone had harmed her daughter, her world changed overnight. Very quickly, the situation became a serious child abuse case in Kano State. Without hesitation, she chose to act to protect her child and seek justice.
Her daughter’s father took her from her grandparents without consent. While she remained in his care, her stepmother inflicted physical and emotional harm on her. Soon after, Ms JA saw the injuries herself. The betrayal was devastating. A mother’s trust was broken and as a result, a child’s safety was violated.
Despite the pain and shock, Ms JA refused to remain silent. Instead, she sought help from the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative. Immediately, AWJAI stepped in. We provided legal guidance, supported her through the child abuse case and worked closely with the relevant authorities.
Meanwhile, photos of the child’s injuries surfaced and sparked public outrage. Because of this, calls for justice grew louder. In response, AWJAI engaged law enforcement and partner organisations to ensure investigators handled the matter properly.
The police investigated the case and filed charges under the Kano State Penal Code Law for conspiracy and cruelty to a child. Following this, the court arraigned both defendants on January 27, 2025. They pleaded not guilty. Afterward, the court remanded them in correctional custody pending the fulfillment of their bail conditions. The court fixed the next hearing for February 10, 2025.
Throughout this process, Ms JA showed remarkable strength. Even in the face of fear, she continued to stand up for her daughter. Her courage shows how a mother’s love can drive the fight for justice.
AWJAI remains committed to supporting survivors of child abuse, pursuing accountability and helping families secure safety, dignity and hope. In the end, this case represents more than legal action. It is about protection, giving a voice to children and ensuring justice.
