Joint Oversight Visit to Nyanya Police Station and Area Command Karu
As part of its ongoing efforts to promote accountability and ensure compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI), in collaboration with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) and Citizens Gavel, conducted oversight visits to Nyanya Police Station and the FCT Area Command on June 24, 2025.
The visits were led by His Worship, Magistrate Haruna A. Haruna, and aimed at assessing the detention practices and general conditions of the facilities.
At Nyanya Police Station, there were no detainees in custody at the time of the visit. However, the team observed poor sanitation conditions, which were brought to the attention of the officers. Magistrate Haruna reminded them of the importance of maintaining a clean environment and adhering strictly to the 48-hour detention rule as stipulated by the ACJA.
At the FCT Area Command, the team met with Superintendent Kumanya Aya, who explained that the command plays a supervisory role over eight divisions and rarely detains individuals. Most of the cases they handle are civil in nature, such as land disputes. The facility was found to be clean and orderly, and Magistrate Haruna commended the officers for their professionalism and encouraged them to continue their good work.
These visits reflect AWJAI’s commitment to strengthening justice sector accountability and ensuring that the rights of citizens are protected at all levels of law enforcement.
