Promoting accountability within Nigeria’s justice system requires consistent monitoring and engagement.  For this reason, AWJAI and its partners carried out an oversight visit to Nyanya Police Station at the FCT Area Command Karu to assess detention practices, facility conditions and compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).

On June 24, 2025, the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI), in collaboration with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) and Citizens’ Gavel, conducted the visit.  His Worship, Magistrate Haruna A. Haruna, led the delegation.

At Nyanya Police Station, the team found no detainees in custody.  However, they observed poor sanitation conditions.  As a result, the team raised this concern with the officers on duty.  The Magistrate also reminded officers to maintain a clean environment and strictly follow the 48-hour detention rule under the ACJA.  This oversight visit to Nyanya Police Station clearly reinforced the importance of proper facility management and lawful detention practices.

At the FCT Area Command Karu, the team met Superintendent Kumanya Aya.  He explained that the command mainly supervises eight divisions and rarely detains suspects.  Instead, it handles administrative and civil matters, including land disputes.  The facility appeared clean and orderly.   The Magistrate commended the officers for their professionalism and encouraged them to maintain full compliance with legal standards.

Overall, these visits demonstrate AWJAI’s continued commitment to strengthening accountability in the justice sector.  More importantly, they show how regular oversight helps ensure that law enforcement institutions respect the rights and dignity of all citizens.
