Justice Intervention Visit to Keffi Correctional Centre

On May 8, 2025, AWJAI joined the Chief Judge of the FCT, Hon. Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, on an intervention visit to the Keffi Correctional Centre. The visit, led by the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), formed part of ongoing efforts to promote access to justice, address custodial congestion, and uphold the dignity and rights of inmates.

Key Outcomes from the Visit:

Addressing Overcrowding

Originally built to accommodate 340 inmates, the facility was holding 741 at the time of the visit. As part of the intervention, 13 inmates (7 women and 6 men) were released. Several others who previously had no scheduled court dates received directives for their cases to be heard within 24 hours, helping to advance timely access to justice.

Highlighting Systemic Challenges

The visit brought attention to ongoing issues such as delayed trials and excessive pre-trial detention. These challenges continue to contribute to overcrowding and prolonged incarceration, underscoring the need for sustained justice sector reforms.

AWJAI remains committed to supporting lawful interventions that promote fair hearing timelines, reduce unnecessary detention, and strengthen accountability within the justice system.
