Professional Misconduct: Ensuring Accountability

Professional misconduct within the legal profession undermines trust and denies individuals the service they rightfully deserve.  This case highlights a clear example of professional misconduct and the need for accountability.  

A complainant approached AWJAI after paying a lawyer to register two business names.  The expectation was simple, the service will be completed within a reasonable time.  However, after receiving payment, the lawyer failed to carry out the work and stopped responding to all communication.  

Despite several attempts to resolve the issue, the situation did not improve.  Efforts to serve a formal demand letter in Calabar were unsuccessful, as the lawyer avoided all contact.  

At AWJAI, we recognise that professional misconduct such as this goes beyond poor service.  It reflects unethical conduct and a breach of professional responsibility.   Therefore, we stepped in to guide the complainant on the appropriate steps to take.
