Overcoming Domestic Violence: A Story of Courage, Education and Hope

Domestic violence almost destroyed a young mother’s life, but timely legal support helped her rebuild a future for herself and her children.

She endured abuse in silence for far too long.  Eventually, the violence escalated.  Her abuser beat her and forced her out of her home with her two young children.  She had no belongings, no money, and nowhere to go.  Worse still, she feared for her life.

However, in the middle of this crisis, in May 2024, she reached out to AWJAI for help.

AWJAI stepped in immediately.  First, we provided legal aid.  Then, at her request, our legal team proceeded to file divorce proceedings, helping her take a clear step towards breaking free from the cycle of domestic violence.  At the same time, we offered guidance, emotional support and practical assistance to help her stabilise her life.

As a result, once her safety was restored, she began to rebuild.  Despite everything she had endured, she returned to her studies and sat for her National Examinations Council (NECO) exams.  She passed successfully, proving that her future would not be defined by abuse.

Over time, there was a turning point.  Following intervention and continued engagement, both parties chose not to proceed with the divorce.  Her husband made a commitment to change and to end all forms of violence.

Today, she is moving forward with renewed stability and dignity.

Her journey shows that survivors of domestic violence can reclaim control of their lives and make informed decisions about their future.  At AWJAI, we remain committed to protecting survivors, restoring hope and supporting safe, lawful and dignified outcomes.
