Restoring Hope and Justice: AWJAI’s Impact at Kuje Custodial Centre
On October 29, 2024, AWJAI, in partnership with Citizens Gavel, embarked on a mission to bring hope and justice to the forgotten inmates of Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre. Among the many stories of injustice, two young men, Mr. MM (17) and Mr. HA (18), stood out.
Mr. MM: A Teenager’s Fight for Freedom
At just 17 years old, Mr. MM was wrongfully accused of stealing an iPhone 13 Pro. Despite his innocence, he endured eight months of wrongful detention, suffering in a system that had failed him. Through the relentless advocacy of our legal team, led by Bar. Femi Moses Ekundayo, a bail application was successfully granted on November 12, 2024. After days of anticipation and delays, Mr. MM was finally released on November 18, 2024.
Mr. HA; Justice for the Innocent
Mr. HA, 18 years old, was falsely accused of stealing a bike. Despite being an innocent bystander, he was unjustly arrested and detained for six months. Fortunately, justice prevailed, and the case against him was dismissed for lack of evidence. On November 18, 2024, Mr. HA walked to of Kuje Custodial Centre, his life forever changed by this ordeal.
A Beacon of Hope
The release of these two young men serves as a powerful reminder of the impact that legal intervention can have. It is a testament to the power of perseverance and a call to action to ensure that no one is deprived of their fundamental rights.
