At AWJAI, we refuse to let financial constraints dictate the length of someone’s sentence. We believe in fair and just outcomes for all individuals, regardless of their socioeconomic status. That’s why on Friday, February 16, 2024, at 6pm, two men walked out of Suleja prison as free individuals.
Mr. AH and Mr. SH were convicted at Jiwa Magistrate Court for a crime of stealing, they claim to know nothing about (they maintain their innocence despite alleged police coercion) and had spent two months at the Suleja Medium Correctional Centre. Although they had been given the option of payment of fines to be released, they could not afford to pay the fines. These brothers, like many underprivileged individuals, lacked legal representation and faced forgotten in the system.
AWJAI Steps in:
Recognizing the injustice, AWJAI provided essential legal representation for Mr. AH and Mr. SH, paid their fines, and secured their release, giving them the opportunity to reunite with their families and rebuild their lives. But AWJAI’s support didn’t end there. Beyond securing their freedom, AWJAI offered post- release assistance to help them reintegrate into society and become productive citizens.
This story is about more than just two brothers; It underscores the struggles of countless individuals facing similar injustices due to poverty and lack of access to legal aid. No one should be imprisoned solely because of financial constraints.
Join AWJAI in the fight for justice. Your support empowers us to continue providing free legal aid, ensuring everyone has a chance at a fair trial and a brighter future.
