On May 8, 2025, the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI) had the honour of accompanying the Chief Judge of the FCT, Hon. Justice Husseini Baba-Yusuf, on a critical intervention visit to the Keffi Correctional Centre. This initiative, led by the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), is part of our ongoing efforts to promote justice, reduce overcrowding, uphold the dignity of every individual behind bars, restoring hope at Keffi Correctional Centre.
Key Highlights from the Visit:
- Tackling Overcrowding – Built for 340 inmates, the centre currently holds 741. As part of the intervention, 13 inmates (7 women and 6 men) were released—granting them a second chance at life. Several others, previously without court dates, received directives to have their cases heard within 24 hours, restoring hope at Keffi Correctional Centre.
- Championing Justice Reform – This visit exposed the persistent issues of delayed trials and excessive pre-trial detention. It reinforced the urgent need for systemic reform to ensure that justice is not only served—but served swiftly and fairly.
At AWJAI, we believe that true justice is measured not only by the laws upheld but by the lives restored.
Thirteen lives were changed forever—seven women and six men walked out of the Keffi Correctional Centre not just as freed inmates but as humans given a second chance. Their release is a testament to what is possible when compassion meets action and when justice serves the people it was meant to protect.
We will not stop until every unjust detention is challenged, and every person—regardless of status—has access to the fairness and dignity they deserve.
Let this remind us all: justice is not complete until it is felt in the hearts of the forgotten.
