ASABE WAZIRI JUSTICE ADVOCACY INITIATIVE

AWJAI’s Commitment to Restorative Justice

On December 12, 2024, the Honourable Chief Judge of the FCT, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, visited the Suleja Correctional Center.  During this visit, the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI) reaffirmed its commitment to securing the release of Mr. F.I., who had been incarcerated since June 2022.   On December 20, 2024, AWJAI successfully fulfilled its promise by paying the N60,000.00 fine required for his release.

Convicted of theft, Mr. F.I. had faced a 7-year prison sentence with the option of a fine of N60,000.00 and a N1,200,000.00 compensation order.  Our team worked tirelessly to coordinate efforts between the Yankogi Area Court and the Suleja Correctional Centre, ensuring every detail of the process was handled with precision.  Beyond facilitating his freedom, AWJAI ensured Mr. F.I. signed an agreement outlining his plan to repay the compensation, emphasizing accountability as a cornerstone of justice and personal growth.

At AWJAI, we advocate for restorative justice, a principle that transcends mere punishment.  True justice involves rehabilitation, reintegration, and creating pathways for individuals to rebuild their lives. By securing Mr. F.I.’s release, we not only fulfilled a promise but also reinforced our commitment to fostering transformation and empowering individuals to embrace brighter futures.

This story is a testament to the power of redemption, the importance of second chances, and the impact of community-driven initiatives.  At AWJAI, we continue to strive for a society that believes in rehabilitation, accountability, and hope.
