ASABE WAZIRI JUSTICE ADVOCACY INITIATIVE

AWJAI’s Commitment to Restorative Justice

On December 12, 2024, the Honourable Chief Judge of the FCT, Justice Husseini Baba Yusuf, visited the Suleja Correctional Center.  During this visit, the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI) reaffirmed its commitment justice by advocating for the release of Mr. F.I., who had been incarcerated since June 2022.

Just days later, on December 20, 2024, AWJAI  fulfilled its promise by paying the N60,000.00 fine required for his release.

Convicted of theft, Mr. F.I. had faced a 7-year prison sentence, with the option of a N60,000.00 fine and a N1,200,000.00 compensation order.  Our team worked tirelessly to coordinate efforts between the Yankogi Area Court and the Suleja Correctional Centre, ensuring every step of the legal and administrative process was meticulously handled.  But our efforts didn’t stop at securing his freedom – AWJAI also facilitated an agreement outlining his plan to repay the compensation, reinforcing accountability as a cornerstone of justice and personal growth.

At AWJAI, we believe in restorative justice – an approach that extends beyond punishment to emphasize rehabilitation, reintegration, and second chances. By securing Mr. F.I.’s release, we not only fulfilled a promise but also reaffirmed our dedication to fostering transformation and empowering individuals to rebuild their lives.

This story is a testament to the power of redemption, the importance of second chances, and the profound impact of community-driven justice.  At AWJAI, we remain committed to advocating for a  society rooted in rehabilitation, accountability, and hope.
