Transformative Justice: AWJAI's Access to Justice Initiative at Suleja Custodial Centre

Imagine the despair of spending 9 months in prison, not for a violent crime, but because you couldn’t afford a ₦30,000 fine. This is the harsh reality for Mr. Shehu and countless others trapped in a cycle of poverty and injustice.

AWJAI’s Prison Intervention Project is fighting to change that. We are on a mission to secure the release of 100 inmates by February 2025, providing legal aid, representation, and even paying fines and settlements to clear their path to freedom.

AWJAI’s pursuit of Access to Justice led us to the Suleja Medium Custodial Centre on 22/1/24. Embraced by the prison officials; our team, including lawyers, paralegals from University of Abuja Legal Clinic, and program officers, visited again on 25/1/24. We engaged with 21 inmates, addressing fines, settlements, and offering legal representation. This 12-month project aims to release a minimum of 100 inmates, marking a transformative journey toward justice.

This is just the beginning. Stand with us and be a voice for change. Support AWJAI’s Access to Justice Initiative and help us break the cycle of injustice.
