Abuse of Authority in the Nigerian Police Force: A Call for Accountability

In a shocking display of abuse of authority in the Nigeria Police Force, a Nigerian police officer, Inspector Collins Wilson Onyebuchi, has been implicated in a tragic incident in Abuja that underscores the urgent need for accountability within the Nigerian Police Force. On the evening of August 26, 2024, Inspector Collins reportedly killed three individuals in a desperate attempt to cover up a crime committed by his girlfriend, Esther.

The Tragic Events Unfolded

The incident began innocuously when Esther was accused of stealing a phone from a tricycle driver who was transporting her. According to eyewitnesses, the situation escalated when the stolen phone rang in Esther’s possession, confirming the theft. Confronted by bystanders, Esther called her boyfriend, Inspector Collins, for help.

What followed was a tragic and reckless misuse of authority. Despite not being on official duty and not issued a rifle, Inspector Collins arrived at the scene armed. Instead of de-escalating the situation, he drew his weapon and fired at close range, killing the tricycle driver and a bystander who was attempting to mediate the situation. In his frantic efforts to protect Esther and conceal her crime, Inspector Collins also shot the motorcyclist who had brought him to the scene. The motorcyclist was critically injured and, after being denied treatment at Garki Hospital, succumbed to his injuries at the National Hospital, where doctors were reportedly on strike.

A Desperate Attempt to Flee

After the shooting, Inspector Collins and Esther fled the scene, commandeering another tricycle. In a bid to evade detection, they later abandoned the tricycle and switched to a motorcycle. However, according to witnesses, their escape was short-lived. The motorcyclist who transported Inspector Collins back to his residence in Apo later informed outraged residents and the police, leading to the swift apprehension of both Inspector Collins and his girlfriend, Esther.

A Troubling Mystery: Where Did the Rifle Come From?

One of the most disturbing aspects of this incident is the question of where Inspector Wilson obtained the rifle and ammunition used in the killings. This incident highlights the abuse of authority in the Nigeria Police Force. As an officer stationed at the Abuja Force Headquarters, he was not on duty at the time of the incident and had not been issued a service weapon. A senior police officer, who requested anonymity, revealed that Inspector Wilson was not assigned to any official duty at the time. Instead, he was reportedly engaged in an illegal activity guarding the estate where he was apprehended, raising serious concerns about the origins of the rifle and bullets he used.

The police are currently investigating how Inspector Wilson acquired the weapon, given that no official rifle was issued to him. As of press time, Inspector Wilson and his girlfriend, Esther, are currently detained by the FCT Command. However, the lack of an official statement from the authorities only deepens the public’s unease and distrust. This incident is a stark example of abuse of authority in there Nigeria Police Force, and it raises serious questions about the controls in place to prevent such misuse of power.

The Urgent Need for Police Reform

This incident is not an isolated case but rather a stark reminder of the systemic issues plaguing the Nigerian Police Force. The abuse of authority in the Nigeria Police Force, the misuse of power, and lack of accountability have eroded public trust in law enforcement. The actions of Inspector Wilson are a grim reflection of the dangers posed when those entrusted with protecting citizens abuse their authority.

The Nigerian Police Force has yet to release an official statement on the incident, further fueling public outrage. On August 27, 2024, residents brought the bodies of two of the victims to the police command, demanding justice for the lives lost.
