Justice Reform for Inmates: AWJAI and Citizens Gavel Partner to Support Inmates at Kuje Custodial Centre

AWJAI, in collaboration with Citizens Gavel, recently visited the Kuje Medium Security Custodial Centre to extend critical support to marginalized inmates. Our legal team engaged  with approximately 50 individuals, emphasizing our unwavering commitment to protecting their rights and ensuring access to justice.

Originally designed to house 560 inmates, the facility is now alarmingly overcrowded, holding 1,055 individuals, with 865 awaiting trial.  This stark reality highlights the urgent need for justice reform for inmates, ensuring that they are not left to languish in detention without due process.

At AWJAI, or mission is clear: to make justice accessible to all, with a particular focus on the underserved. True justice cannot be achieved without ensuring that every individual, regardless of their circumstances, has access to legal support and fair treatment under the law.

Through initiatives like our recent partnership with Citizens Gavel, we continue to provide direct assistance to vulnerable inmates—many trapped in pre-trial detention or suffering from prolonged delays in their cases. By listening to their stories and offering legal counsel, we work to uphold their rights and ensure they are afforded a fair opportunity for justice.

Our efforts focus on addressing systemic barriers faced by indigent and and marginalized communities, who are often excluded from the justice system due to limited resources or lack of legal representation. By providing free legal aid, advocating for access to justice, and raising awareness, we aim to bridge this gap and empower those most in need.

Our commitment to justice reform for inmates and protecting the rights of the vulnerable is steadfast. We will continue advocating for meaningful reforms to create a  legal system that is inclusive, fair and accessible to all. Whether through direct legal support, public advocacy, or strategic partnerships, AWJAI remains a dedicated ally in the fight for justice.

Together, we can drive change and build. society where justice is not a privilege but a right accessible to everyone – one case at a time.
