May 2026 Police Oversight Visits Across the FCT

In May 2026, the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI), in collaboration with ACJMC, Citizens’ Gavel, NBA Nyanya & Karu Branches, Human Rights Commission (NHRC), PPDC, Hope Behind Bars and DSN conducted police oversight visits across the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

These visits were aimed at strengthening accountability within detention facilities, promoting compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, and safeguarding the rights of individuals in custody.

Where We Visited

The team conducted visits to police divisions in Bwari, Ushafa, Kuje, River Park, Karu, Nyanya, Maitama and Utako.

What We Found and Did

Across these locations, we engaged with 56 detainees.

We reviewed detention registers, examined case files and engaged with officers to better understand the status of investigations, identify delays and encourage compliance with due process requirements.

As a result of these engagements:

  • 10 detainees were charged to court
  • 13 detainees received bail and were released
  • 33 detainees are remained under investigation

These outcomes demonstrate the value of consistent police oversight. By reviewing cases and engaging directly with officers and detainees, oversight visits help reduce unnecessary delays, improve transparency and encourage timely case progression.

Why This Matters

Behind every case file is a person.

Someone waiting for clarity.
Someone waiting for fairness. Someone whose rights and freedom depend on the proper functioning of the justice system.

When oversight is absent, delays can go unnoticed and rights may be compromised. When oversight is consistent, accountability is strengthened and justice processes become more transparent and responsive.

This work contributes to:

  • Stronger accountability within police detention facilities
  • Greater compliance with legal and procedural safeguards
  • Better protection of detainees’ rights and dignity
Our Commitment

AWJAI remains committed to sustained engagement with justice sector stakeholders and to conducting regular police oversight visits across the FCT.

We believe accountability must be visible, consistent, and enforceable.

Because j ustice is not complete until it is experienced.
