April 2026 Police Oversight Visits in Abuja
In April 2026, the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI), in collaboration with ACJMC and Citizens’ Gavel, conducted police oversight visits across Abuja.
These visits strengthen accountability, promote compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015, and help protect the rights of detainees.
Where We Visited
Our team visited the following police divisions: Bwari, Ushafa, Kuje, River Park, Karu, Nyanya and Utako.
What We Found and Did
During these visits, we engaged with 23 detainees. We reviewed detention records, assessed case progress, and spoke with officers to ensure due process was followed.
As a result of these visits:
- 13 detainees were charged to court
- 5 detainees were released on bail
- 5 detainees remain under investigation
These outcomes show how timely police oversight visits help prevent delays and ensure cases move forward as required by law.
Why This Work Matters
Behind every number is a person.
Someone waiting for fairness.
Someone waiting for due process.
Without regular oversight, detainees may be held beyond lawful limits or overlooked within the system. But when oversight is consistent, things change.
Our work helps to:
- Promote accountability within police divisions
- Ensure compliance with legal procedures
- Protect the rights and dignity of detainees
Our Commitment
AWJAI remains committed to strengthening accountability within Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
We will continue to engage stakeholders and carry out police oversight visits across Abuja.
Because justice must not only be promised. It must be practised, visible and experienced by all.
