Justice on the Clock: Oversight Visit to Ushafa Police Station

On 22 July 2025, the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI), with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) and Citizens’ Gavel, conducted an oversight visit to Ushafa Police Station. The visit aimed to uphold the rule of law and ensure that detention practices complied with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA), 2015. Her Worship, Magistrate Chiemena Nonye Okoronkwo, led the visit and engaged directly with officers and detainees to assess compliance.
During the visit, the team found five detainees in custody. They faced offences including criminal conspiracy, receiving stolen property, and armed robbery. However, the team discovered that all five had been held beyond the legally permitted period.
Magistrate Okoronkwo interviewed each detainee and instructed that they be charged to court without delay. She also reminded officers of the risks of prolonged detention and stressed the importance of adhering to legal timelines.
The team then met the Divisional Police Officer (DPO), AA Sambo, who received the Magistrate’s guidance professionally. This interaction reinforced an important principle: justice delayed is justice denied. Every hour beyond the legal limit represents a breach of fundamental rights.
AWJAI remains committed to ensuring access to justice for all, regardless of socio-economic background. Through continued engagement with law enforcement, judicial authorities, and detainees, AWJAI identifies gaps in compliance and promotes a culture of accountability and respect for the law.
