The Bwari Police Oversight Visit

The Bwari Police Oversight Visit reflects AWJAI’s ongoing commitment to justice sector reform.  In collaboration with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) and Citizens’ Gavel, AWJAI conducted a monitoring visit led by Her Worship Okoronkwo Chiemene.

During the visit on August 29, 2024, the team reviewed detention conditions and ongoing cases.  Notably, we encountered an inmate who had remained in custody for seven months because he could not meet bail conditions.  The detainee, an orphan facing financial hardship, had been granted bail but lacked the means to fulfill the requirements.

Following this, AWJAI, in partnership with Citizens’ Gavel, initiated steps to facilitate his release. After engagement with the relevant authorities and adjustments to the bail conditions, he was successfully released.

This Bwari Police Oversight Visit reinforces our commitment to upholding the rule of law and protecting human rights. Through regular monitoring, advocacy, and collaboration with justice sector stakeholders, we continue to promote fair bail practices and humane treatment for all individuals in custody.

At AWJAI, we believe that justice must not depend on financial capacity or social status.  Every oversight visit strengthens our resolve to challenge prolonged detention and promote lawful, humane treatment within detention facilities.  We will continue to engage duty bearers, support vulnerable detainees, and advocate for reforms that ensure fairness, accountability, and equal protection under the law.
