Trademore Police Oversight Visit: Justice in Action

The Trademore police oversight visit reflects AWJAI’s continued efforts to strengthen accountability and promote lawful detention practices. On July 30, 2024, AWJAI conducted an oversight inspection at Trademore Police Station alongside Magistrate Ibegu Linda Abhiranyam of the Magistrate Court Lugbe, the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), Citizens’ Gavel and Duty Solicitors Network.
The visit focused on reviewing detention records, assessing compliance with bail procedures and protecting detainees’ rights. Regular oversight inspections such as this help prevent unnecessary detention and strengthen transparency within the justice system.
During the inspection, the team identified two detainees accused of theft. The suspects admitted to the offence. However, the victim had already recovered the stolen items and chose not to pursue the matter further. As a result, the case was promptly reviewed and taken before the court.
The suspects appeared before the magistrate, who carefully considered the circumstances. Given the victim’s decision not to press charges, the magistrate ordered their immediate release. This outcome shows the importance of swift judicial review and strong collaboration among justice sector stakeholders.
The Trademore police oversight visit demonstrates how coordinated monitoring can lead to timely and fair outcomes. It also highlights the importance of engaging magistrates, legal practitioners, and monitoring bodies to safeguard due process.
At AWJAI, we continue to promote lawful detention practices, encourage alternatives to prolonged custody and support reforms that strengthen fairness and accountability. Through sustained oversight and strategic partnerships, we ensure that justice is not only enforced but delivered promptly and humanely.
