AWJAI, in partnership with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), Citizens Gavel, Hope Behind Bars Africa, the Nigerian Bar Association Human Rights Committee, and students from the Nigerian Law School, conducted a monitoring visit to Dawaki Police Station on September 26, 2024. The visit was led by Magistrate Muhammad Tahir and other court officials.
The goal of the visit was to assess the station’s compliance with the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) and address issues related to cell overcrowding, ensuring fair treatment for detainees. While the environment was generally clean, the Divisional Police Officer (DPO) raised several challenges, such as a shortage of Magistrates to handle cases promptly, leading to extended detentions, and a lack of family support for detainees, which requires the police to provide food. The station also faces critical shortages of essentials like mats, toiletries, sanitary items, and detergent.
This visit reinforces our commitment to justice reform, accountability, and the protection of human rights.
