From Detention to Freedom: Four Lives Changed by Legal Representation

In early 2026, AWJAI secured the release of four individuals from detention through sustained legal representation and advocacy.

These cases reflect a common reality within Nigeria’s justice system: prolonged detention, delayed trials and limited access to legal support. For many, the absence of legal representation means remaining in custody far longer than necessary.

Each case tells a different story, but all point to the same truth.

Mr X was arrested during a period of mental health distress and remained in custody without proper care. After months of legal follow-up, his case was struck out for lack of diligent prosecution, and he was discharged.

Mr M and Mr Z spent nearly a year navigating the court system without representation. With AWJAI’s intervention, their case was struck out, and their freedom restored.

In another case, Mr M, a security guard, spent nine months in detention as his case stalled. AWJAI took up his case and provided legal representation.

On two occasions, the prosecution failed to appear in court. The defence applied for the case to be struck out, but the court declined.

At the next adjourned date, the complainant applied to withdraw the complaint. The court subsequently struck out the case, and Mr M was discharged after months of waiting behind bars.

In a separate case, a young bus conductor faced eight months’ imprisonment following a fight. Through legal representation, payment of fine, compensation and completion of the required processes, AWJAI secured his release.

These stories highlight a critical truth: many people remain in detention not because they have been proven guilty, but because they lack legal representation.

Access to justice can mean the difference between prolonged detention and freedom.

These cases also reflect a difficult reality: securing release often takes months, and sometimes years of sustained legal efforts and persistence.

At AWJAI, we remain committed to ensuring that no one is forgotten in the system and that every individual has a fair chance at justice.
