National ACJA Symposium: Reflecting on a Decade of Reform

On November 25 and 26, 2025, AWJAI participated in the National ACJA Symposium, marking ten years of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) 2015. This event was hosted by the Administration of Criminal Justice Committee (ACJMC) and brought together justice sector stakeholders from across Nigeria. It provided a valuable platform to reflect on progress and set priorities for the next decade of reforms.

During the event, participants reviewed key achievements of the ACJA 2015. Over the past ten years, the law has improved case management, reduced delays in criminal trials and strengthened procedural safeguards. However, implementation still varies across states. Therefore, stronger monitoring, collaboration and accountability remain essential.

The theme of the National ACJA Symposium was “Reflecting on a Decade of ACJA: Achievements and Future Direction.” Discussions focused on improving coordination among justice institutions. In addition, participants emphasised human rights compliance at every stage of the criminal justice process. Moreover, they explored ways to enhance transparency and public trust in criminal proceedings.

Technology and innovation were also key focus areas during the Symposium. Stakeholders examined how digital tools can improve case tracking, data management and access to justice. Furthermore, technology can make the system more efficient and citizen-centred. By adopting innovation, institutions can reduce delays and increase transparency.

For AWJAI, participating in the National ACJA Symposium reinforced its commitment to justice sector reform. The organisation continues to advocate for inclusive policies, accountability and effective implementation of the ACJA. We remain committed to promoting fairness, improving efficiency and expanding equal access to justice for all Nigerians.
