January 2026 Police Oversight Visits with ACJMC
In January 2026, AWJAI conducted police oversight visits across Abuja. These visits promote transparency. They also strengthen accountability and protect human rights.
We worked closely with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC). In addition, we partnered with Citizens’ Gavel, Olive Tree Initiative and Hope Behind Bars. Most importantly, a Magistrate led each visit to ensure compliance with the law.
Durumi Police Station (January 19, 2026)
During this police oversight visit, the team met four detainees. They faced allegations of theft, conspiracy and assault.
First, Magistrate Aisha Mana reviewed the detention records. She then reminded officers that detainees must have valid remand orders. As a result, officers followed proper legal procedures.
Key outcomes:
- Three detainees were transferred to the state CID
- One detainee was charged to court
Overall, the cells were clean. However, a slight odour remained. In addition, officers cooperated fully and provided all records promptly.

Bwari and Ushafa Police Stations (January 29, 2026)
Next, AWJAI carried out police oversight visits to Bwari and Ushafa Police Stations. Magistrate Nonye Okonkwo led both visits. The team focused on detainee welfare and compliance with the ACJA 2015.

The station was in good condition. Officers followed proper legal procedures.

Utako Police Station (January 30, 2026)

The team found the cells in fair condition. Importantly, no minors were in custody. Officers followed the law and remained cooperative throughout the visit.
Why Police Oversight Visits Matters
Each police oversight visit plays a vital role in protecting rights. First, it prevents unlawful detention. Second, it promotes strict compliance with the law. Third, it builds public trust in law enforcement. Finally, it protects the dignity of detainees.
AWJAI continues to prioritise police oversight visits. We actively monitor detention practices and hold institutions accountable. Above all, we remain committed to fairness, dignity and the rule of law.
