Suleja Correctional Facility Legal Aid Visit
On July 25, 2025, AWJAI’s Legal Team conducted a Suleja Correctional Facility legal aid visit as part of ongoing efforts to support access to justice for inmates. The visit focused on monitoring case progress, engaging detainees in need of legal assistance, and identifying practical challenges affecting inmates’ ability to pursue justice.
During the visit, 23 inmates (20 male and 3 female) were interviewed. Priority was given to individuals without legal representation and those experiencing prolonged trial delays. Information was also gathered on challenges related to court adjournments, representation status, and transportation to court.
Key observations from the Suleja Correctional Facility legal aid visit included:
Delayed or Missed Court Attendance
The facility currently operates with only two functional transport vans, resulting in frequent missed court appearances.
Gaps in Case Information
Some inmates lacked full details of their cases. Facility staff provided access to court records to support legal follow-up.
The visit highlighted ongoing logistical and systemic barriers affecting access to justice, particularly transportation constraints that delay court proceedings.
AWJAI continues to engage relevant institutions, provide legal support, and follow up on identified cases to help ensure that individuals are not denied justice due to avoidable administrative or logistical challenges.
