On 22 July 2025, AWJAI, in collaboration with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) and Citizens Gavel, conducted a monitoring visit to Nyanya Police Station.  The visit formed part of ongoing efforts to promote accountability and protect human rights within Nigeria’s criminal justice system.  His Worship Haruna A. Haruna of the Karu Magistrate Court led the exercise.

During the visit, the team found six detainees in custody.  Notably, three had been held beyond the 48 hours permitted by law without being charged before a court.  In response, the Magistrate directed that if the complainants failed to appear, the detainees should be charged without further delay.

In addition, the Magistrate granted bail to two individuals.  One was involved in a fatal motorcycle accident, while the other was arrested for menacing.  Both were required to provide sureties to meet their bail conditions.

A physical inspection of the station revealed that the cells were in poor condition, raising concerns about the dignity and welfare of detainees.  At the same time, the Investigating Police Officers handling each case were present and provided updates on their investigations.

The Magistrate commended the officers for their cooperation and dedication.  However, he also reminded them of the importance of upholding the rule of law and respecting the rights of all individuals in custody.

This monitoring visit to Nyanya Police Station shows why oversight remains essential.  AWJAI believes that justice begins at the grassroots level, particularly within police stations.  Therefore, if accountability is to be sustained, consistent oversight must continue.
