Justice in Action: Police oversight visit at Apo Police Station

Police oversight visit at Apo Police Station took place on January 15, 2025, when AWJAI conducted a monitoring exercise in collaboration with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), Hope Behind Bars Africa (HBBA) and the Neriah Hope and Light Foundation. His Worship Abdulmajid Oniyangi led the visit in line with Section 34 of the Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA).
During the visit, the team identified several detainees who had remained in custody beyond the legally permitted 48-hour detention period. One case raised serious concern. Mr J explained that officers arrested him in place of his brother. This situation clearly violated due process under Section 7 of the ACJA.
The Magistrate reviewed the case immediately and directed officers to either grant bail or charge Mr J to court without delay. He also instructed AWJAI to monitor the case closely. As a result, Mr J secured bail and regained his freedom on January 17, 2025.
In addition, the team addressed broader welfare concerns during the visit. AWJAI and HBBA donated sanitary items to improve hygiene conditions at the station. This action supported detainee wellbeing and reinforced the importance of humane treatment.
Overall, this police oversight visit at Apo Police Station shows how timely intervention prevents unlawful detention and protects fundamental rights. It also demonstrates that consistent monitoring strengthens accountability and improves justice outcomes.

The police oversight visit at Apo Police Station highlights the impact of collaboration in promoting human rights and accountability. AWJAI and its partners remain committed to strengthening the justice system and ensuring fair treatment for all detainees.
