On January 20, 2025, the Asabe Waziri Justice Advocacy Initiative (AWJAI), alongside the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC), Citizens’ Gavel, Public and Private Development Centre (PPDC), Legend Golden Care Foundation, Law Hub Development Advocacy and Hope Behind Bars Africa (HBBA), conducted a police oversight visit to Dawaki Police Station. His Worship Muhammed Tahir led the visit. The team focused on promoting justice, protecting human dignity and ensuring due process for all.

During the police oversight visit, the team interviewed nine detainees. Following the review, the Magistrate ordered the immediate release of three detainees after finding no legal basis for their continued detention. In addition, four detainees were scheduled for court arraignment, while two were granted bail. These actions provided timely relief and reinforced the importance of fair and prompt justice.

The visit also revealed clear improvements in detention conditions. The holding cells were cleaner, and the station now had running water. At the same time, His Worship Muhammed Tahir reminded officers that the law does not allow detention beyond 48 hours without a court order. This safeguard remains essential in preventing unlawful detention and protecting individual rights.

AWJAI and HBBA also donated sanitary materials to improve hygiene at the station. However, the visit highlighted ongoing challenges. Officers often struggle to provide adequate meals for detainees and sometimes rely on personal resources. This situation shows the need for stronger institutional support and better resource allocation.

Overall, the police oversight visit to Dawaki Police Station demonstrates how collaboration can strengthen accountability and improve justice outcomes. At AWJAI, we remain committed to building a justice system where fairness, dignity and human rights are protected for everyone.
