Professional Misconduct in the Legal Profession: Disqualification

Professional misconduct in the legal profession often goes unchecked when people remain silent. However, accountability begins when individuals choose to speak up.
In June 2024, AWJAI’s founder received concerning information. A lawyer who had orchestrated her unlawful eviction in March 2022, was now actively campaigning to become Chairman of a Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) branch in Abuja. This raised serious concerns about professional misconduct in the legal profession and the integrity expected of those in leadership.
Recognising the implications, she took immediate action. She formally wrote to the President of the Nigerian Bar Assosiation, setting out the relevant facts and concerns. Her decision to act ensured that the matter received proper attention.
Following a review by the NBA Election Appeals Committee, the candidate was disqualified from the election. This outcome prevented an individual with a history of misconduct from assuming a leadership position within the legal profession. This case shows why accountability matters. When misconduct is challenged, it helps protect the integrity of institutions and strengthens public trust.
At AWJAI, we encourage individuals to speak up when they encounter professional misconduct in the legal profession. By doing so, we can promote ethical standards, uphold justice and ensure that leadership reflects the values the profession stands for.
