Monitoring for Accountability: What We Found at Ushafa Police Station

In line with our commitment to promoting equitable access to justice and strengthening the criminal justice system in Nigeria, the AWJAI team participated in a police monitoring visit to Ushafa Police Station on July 23, 2025.

The visit was conducted in collaboration with the Administration of Criminal Justice Monitoring Committee (ACJMC) and was led by Her Worship, Chiemena Nonye Okoronkwo.

There were seven detainees in custody at the time of the visit, including one minor. While the cells were clean, they were notably small and cramped. Nonetheless, officers on duty demonstrated a commendable level of professionalism and commitment to their responsibilities.

None of the detainees had exceeded the 48-hour detention period as stipulated by law and this is commendable. Her Worship ordered that the minor be separated from adult detainees and directed that the remaining detainees be charged to court without delay.

At AWJAI, we believe justice is not a privilege for a few but a right for all.
